Creepies.
October 10, 2008
When did it get so cold out? I was just hitting my stride tan- and A/C usage-wise when suddenly, it was fall. Alas. Though I prefer summer, at least the change in season means I can have pumpkin pie (best pie ever) and take my fierce boots out of storage.
It also means that Halloween is just around the corner. In that vein, here are some creepy little goodies from Supermarket.
Shown above are: Skulls screenprinted greeting card | Sohan the scared-y ghost | The Deer on Moni screen print | IXNY plate | Lil Whalebone (ok, maybe more weird and cute than creepy) | Carry Monster tee | Cleaver pendant | Ab Imo Pectore pendant
Enjoy and happy weekend! Go apple picking or something while you still can. As for me, I’m off to the Cape for a wedding. Til next week…

I am what I… am served in targeted interwebs ad placements?
October 8, 2008
Working at a digital advertising agency makes me hyperaware of the targeted content I am served on the interwebs. Usually, and to my chagrin, the Face likes to serve me ads like “25 and sick of your love handles?” with truly unappealing visuals in its seemingly innocuous right sidebar placement. But yesterday, after assessing everything it knows about me (quite a lot, I suppose), it thought an ad for this would suit me to a T…
Ha! I love the hair, but Face… emo? Me? Really? I thought ye knew me.
Designed by Dmitry and printed on American Apparel t-shirts - and available for a limited time here.

Prairie cabin.
October 6, 2008
Love this little vase from the Loyal Loot collective’s Dara Humniski. An idyllic porcelain landscape rolls and swells beneath a big bloom, and just under it - look close - is a tiny house.

Draw draw draw.
October 3, 2008
The drawings at draw draw draw make me smile - the style reminds me of the illustrations in some of my favorite books growing up, and the blog is like a kind of droll graphical diary. Artist Liz Tjepkema says:
Computers frustrate me, but I like blogs. This blog will feature drawings documenting my stuff and the food I eat.
Ah, it’s the simple things. -smile- Have a look at her work, plus cards, calendars, and more at her shop.

I Am Still Alive.
October 1, 2008
Remember the We Are So Good Together print I loved this spring? Here are more great prints from Dylan Fareed’s Brooklyn design practice, I Am Still Alive: I Can’t Get No, Gravity’s Rainbow, The Seven Rules of Astronomy (”shit be hot, shit be not hot” - ha! loves it), and Holler.

Small Square Design.
September 29, 2008
Seriously sweet letterpressed cards, tags, and other items from Basak Notz’s San Francisco-based Small Square Design. I love the sketchy, doodly feel of these designs.
For more, check out the etsy shop or Basak’s blog, full of mistakes. Boston-area readers can find her products in-store at the Harvard Book Store - and I was pleased to learn that they are also available near my alma mater at Northampton’s Essentials.

The world in rice.
September 29, 2008
British theater company Stan’s Cafe is putting on a touring exhibition, Of All the People in All the World, which uses 112 tons of rice to illustrate all kinds of statistics - with one grain representing one person. (Thanks to Dave for telling me about it!) Take a look…
John F. Kennedy and crowd, Berlin 06/26/1963, vs. Barack Obama and crowd, Berlin, 07/24/2008.

Self-explanatory (this is why I bought my copy online).

For more, visit the exhibition’s Flickr stream.

A few cool prints.
September 29, 2008
From London design agency SampsonMay - Radius ‘09 (a radial 2009 calendar), Dirty Bird, and Use Two Hands. Though they work primarily on design projects for corporate clients, the people at SampsonMay spend their non-work hours on great art prints like these, among other things. Take a look at their online shop, Justgonesix.

Thuss Farrell.
September 24, 2008
Beautiful images from photography and design studio Thuss Farrell (duo Rebecca Thuss and Patrick Farrell). I love how lush these photos are in color, texture, and mood - even the pair of paper lunch bags.

Irresistibly absurd.
September 22, 2008
It’s birthday season in my social circle and in the midst of all the attendant events, a friend introduced me to the Los Angeles stationer Fomato.
Unidentifiable bloblike creatures (that seem vaguely inspired by contemporary Japanese graphic design) prance through brightly-colored three-panel greeting cards, dispensing hilariously irrelevant how-tos and factoids - from how to be a pessimist (”This mango is sweet and delicious… but I’ve already had 12 delicious mangoes today”) to how to convert from Fahrenheit to Celsius (”It feels like 100 degrees Fahrenheit in hrrr” - why do I think this is so funny?).
The online shop is opening in November, but until then Boston-area peeps can get these at Black Ink (among other places).

Pancake & Franks.
September 15, 2008
Gorgeous contours and textures from Arizona-based Stacy Pancake’s Pancake & Franks, taking their inspiration from nature - things as simple as wood, garlic bulbs, and sea urchins don’t escape artistic notice here.
