Organisms.

I wrote about Brooklyn sculptor Tara Donovan a while back, and was lucky enough to see some of her work in person last night at the ICA. The exhibit runs through January 4 and I highly, highly recommend seeing it if you’re in the area.
Donovan transforms the mundane - pins, toothpicks, Scotch tape - into incredible, undulating, large-scale sculptures that strongly call to mind living, growing forms. There are thousands of drinking straws that together form a shifting membrane against the wall, translucent valleys and opaque peaks of stacked plastic cups, and blurry stalagmites constructed totally of clear plastic buttons and glue. I really can’t do it justice - you just have to see.
Here’s me standing under a piece made of disposable coffee cups (we just managed to get this picture before being reprimanded by a hipster-dude docent) - it was like being in the belly of some great styrofoam beast.
