You are just darling

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008Over Thanksgiving, D’s little niece had me spend a good ten minutes smelling all her fruit-scented markers, which made me think it’s really been too long since I’ve had things like smelly markers in my life. Portland-based Stubby Pencil Studio updates the idea with these eco-friendly colored “smencils” made of recycled newspaper - fun! [...]
Irresistibly absurd.
Monday, September 22nd, 2008It’s birthday season in my social circle and in the midst of all the attendant events, a friend introduced me to the Los Angeles stationer Fomato.
Unidentifiable bloblike creatures (that seem vaguely inspired by contemporary Japanese graphic design) prance through brightly-colored three-panel greeting cards, dispensing hilariously irrelevant how-tos and factoids - from how to be a [...]
The abc’s.
Monday, September 8th, 2008Love this alphabet chart from The Small Object, created wholly from their line of rubber stamps. Goofy little creatures - from underdogs to dust bunnies to teeth - cavort in rows across the chart, illustrating their letters. Available in sepia and green.
Plastic pears.
Wednesday, August 13th, 2008These udder-like pear juice bottles designed by Conor Hagan make me laugh. Check out their little feet.

Like sugar.
Monday, August 11th, 2008UK designer Vicky Riley’s button-, ribbon-, and lace-festooned coin purses are almost too sweet.
But wait, there’s more! See her etsy shop for a variety of other handmade items.
Sitting pretty.
Monday, August 4th, 2008Even more sweet songbirds, this time in three dimensions. Those handy with a needle and thread will find plenty to keep them occupied at Spool, including a pattern for this mobile. I like the real branches - a naturalistic touch.
The warm and fuzzies.
Wednesday, July 30th, 2008For anyone with a bent for crochet and kawaii, take a peek at Tiny Yarn Animals by Tamie Snow, to be published in early August. I got a sneak peek at the book this week - 21 round-bodied and beady-eyed critters assembled with (what I am told are) basic stitches cavort through the pages [...]
Egg pants… and the Supermarket.
Monday, July 14th, 2008First off, these are amazing.
Egg pants! Ok really they are just egg cups with feet, but sometimes it’s all about what you name your product. Egg pants! The world has more joy in it now, thanks to Kegan Fisher and Liz Kinnmark’s Design Glut.
I found this on Supermarket, an online shop chock-full [...]
Zoo and city in a box.
Wednesday, May 28th, 2008I’m into these toy sets from Superspace, a Copenhagen-based design studio founded by architects Sarah Müllertz and Stine Holscher. Despite the modern graphics and fresh colors, there’s something a charmingly old-fashioned about this wooden city and zoo in a box.

It’s getting warmer…
Wednesday, April 16th, 2008…slowly but surely, even here in the city of near-perpetually unfavorable weather. I’m anticipating the first leaves, flowers, and re-appearance of small mammals with these cards from Good on Paper and Tennis, Anyone?
Look at this beauteous beauty.
Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008An aside on my other favorite topic: food. Merril and I created this massive and life-changing sandwich recently, and we call him… The Best Friend. Think thick slices of whole wheat bread, caramelized raisins, bubbling hot cheddar cheese, honey roasted turkey, apple butter, and tart slices of granny smith apple. Visit her [...]
Sweet sleep.
