Armed with her vintage Polaroid camera, photographer Jennifer Altman finds beauty in the little things - a drained cup of cocoa, a half-dozen fresh eggs, a pile of dishes waiting to be washed, breakfast… The graininess and soft blur inherent in her Polaroid prints lend these shots a lush timelessness. Just gorgeous.

My life would be a lot more harrowing if it weren’t for keyboard shortcuts. During the workday I’m all about Excel shortcuts (Alt-E-S-V, anyone? - that’s “paste values” for the uninitiated), but while prepping a blog post in the evening, I switch over to Photoshop shortcuts, where my command key (that’s him above) gets all the action. So, these fantastic prints from Brooklyn-based graphic designer Christopher David Ryan make me smile. Photoshop junkies can find them at his online shop, My Little Underground.
Need a translation? From left to right: “Close your eyes and open your mind”; “Please do not copy - create something new”; and “Somebody save me from these fools”.
Genius.

O, the world we live in… This is based on a gchat I actually had. I’m guessing this speaks to more people than would readily admit it.

To send this to a stalkee, you’ll need:
Or, if you’d prefer to print to a standard-sized sheet and cut out the card, use sheets of cardstock like this and download the design in PDF format.
I keep eyeing this hefty tome at my local bookshop, and over time I’ve gone from simply admiring it to fully-blown coveting it. 1080 Recipes, by mother-daughter team Simone and Inés Ortega, has been Spain’s best-selling cookbook for the past 30 years. This bible of Spanish cookery is impressively comprehensive - sauces, stews, appetizers, tapas, meats, veggies - it’s all in there.
Last October, Phaidon Press released the first-ever English translation, gorgeously illustrated by the highly-regarded Javier Mariscal. Here’s a look at a few of the charmingly homey drawings of the 200+ he created specifically for the English edition. (Also, visit the website to download sample recipes straight from the book!)

The Keep Calm Gallery (which, true to its name, stocks the print nearest and dearest to me) has expanded its offerings - and it’s all… I… can… do… to not grab them all for my walls. I love them for their vintage look-and-feel but modern sensibilities. Here are some of my favorites.

Incidentally, the Make Your Own Path prints are hand-letterpressed by artist Doug Wilson onto his own antique maps, so each one is different. (Just suited to my favorite nonconformist.)
Art-loving Bostonians will be happy to know that Space 242 in the South End is opening their fifth exhibition of the year today: Flora & Fauna, featuring illustrations, paintings, and mixed media by Joe Keinberger and Sarah Coyne. The opening reception is tonight from 6-8pm (visit the website to RSVP, if you can!). Here’s a look at some of their work.

I heard from Basak Miller earlier this week, telling me about her new line of greeting cards, T-shirts, and totes at the New York-based Par Amour Designs. Originally from Istanbul, Basak combines her interests in screenwriting and graphic design in these cheeky yet elegant cards (and you know I like a little sass in this kind of thing). Here are a few - check out the website for more.

If you’re in the Brooklyn area this weekend, here’s another chance to check out Stationery and Skirts, brought to you by NicEvents and Kimera Design. For the juicy deets, see the invitation.

Take a peek at these! Amy Branch over at Mariella Designs sent me these beautifully detailed, nature-inspired samples this week (much to my own personal, as well as blognerd, delight). Each card is printed with soy-based inks on recycled, luxuriously textured heavy-weight felt paper.

Check out Mariella Designs’ website for the wide range of greeting cards, boxed note sets, imprintables, invitations, and postcards they offer. Their online shopping cart will be up in early June, but until then you can find them in specialty and paper shops, including two of my favorites - Anthropologie and Paper Source.
